About the Original
The National Gold Banks were a unique and short-lived chapter in American monetary history. Between 1870 and 1875, only ten National Gold Banks were ever chartered — all in California — and their notes were the only federally chartered currency ever required to be redeemable in gold coin on demand. The First National Gold Bank of San Francisco was the most prominent of these institutions, serving the booming post-Gold Rush economy of California. The gold coin reverse — depicting actual Liberty Head Half Eagles — is unique in all of American currency history, making this note an absolute must-have for any serious Americana or numismatic collection.
